The voice compression for this device is so extreme that I have never been able to understand the telephone numbers that my callers leave on the machine. The device memory is probably good for only five minutes of clear recording, but it has been stretched to 40 minutes of garbled recording by extreme data compression, in order to advertise a longer recording time. When I listen to a message, I can still catch the gist of the message from the context, but I can never understand the telephone numbers because garbled numbers cannot be guessed from the context. What I find ironic is that the factory pre-recorded voice prompts are VERY clear, meaning that they were not compressed at all or were only slightly compressed. This is done in order to sell the device more easily, yet the machine compresses incoming messages severely in order to inflate the advertised recording time.
